Loyola hosts NORD reform panel discussion on upcoming vote

September 24, 2010

Loyola University New Orleans and Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans will host a public panel discussion next week on proposed legislation that would create the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, a public private partnership to provide for increased resources for recreational services for citizens of all ages. The legislation would amend the city’s Home Rule Charter in an attempt to create a model for New Orleans recreation.

The forum will take place Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in Loyola’s Roussel Hall. Free parking is available in the West Road garage on Loyola’s main campus.

Learn firsthand from city leaders and members of the New Orleans Recreation Department Citizens Advisory Panel, NORD CAP, the tremendous impact this vote will have on the youth of our city. Citizens of New Orleans will vote on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the amendment to the Home Rule Charter to create a model for New Orleans recreation.

President of New Orleans City Council Arnie Fielkow is among those leading this effort for the city.
“Offering activities to New Orleans area youth and our seniors is our duty as a city. Not only does recreation help our kids develop outside the classroom, but also keeps them occupied and out of trouble. In effect, improving NORD is like taking a daily vitamin. It is preventative care for our kids. It is an investment in their future,” said Fielkow.

Sponsoring organizations for the event include Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans, Common Good, Loyola University New Orleans, Puentes, The Public Law Center, and the Young Leadership Council.
