Mass to be held to celebrate start of school year

September 3, 2010

The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, in Holy Name of Jesus Church. Loyola University New Orleans President Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., will be the principal celebrant. The Rev. William Farge, S.J., chair and associate professor of language and culture, will be the homilist. Faculty, administrators, staff and students are invited to attend this important event in the life of the Loyola community.

All 11 a.m. classes will be canceled specifically for members of the Loyola University community to attend this celebration.

Most Catholic schools, and especially Jesuit high schools and universities, celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every school year. It is a tradition almost as old as the Society of Jesus itself, going back to the first Jesuit school in Messina, Sicily, in 1548.

The event is planned and coordinated by University Ministry. For more information, contact University Ministry at 504-865-3226 or ministry@loyno.edu.
