Alumnus Peter Finney '49, honored at Pro Football Hall of Fame
August 13, 2010
There are some in New Orleans – Emeril, Harry Connick Jr., or Angela Hill – who need no introduction. The same list would have to include longtime New Orleans sports columnist and Loyola University New Orleans alumnus, Peter Finney ’49. Finney was recently honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the Dick McCann Memorial Award in recognition of his long and distinguished career which spanned more than a half century.
Anyone who has picked up a New Orleans newspaper in the last 65 years knows the name Peter Finney.
Finney began his career fresh out of Jesuit High School on June 22, 1945 writing for the States, one of New Orleans' now defunct afternoon papers. To offer some perspective, that was the last day of the Battle of Okinawa. Three months later, Finney, already a working journalist, enrolled in Loyola as a journalism student.
“I was already working at the States, so I had to stagger my classes around my beat,” said Finney. “I’d have classes early in the morning and then head out to cover American Legion baseball or whatever I was assigned. I somehow made it work.”
“For the last 65 years, going to work has never been a job to me. It’s been a joy,” said Finney. “I go from sport to sport, season to season, meeting different people and doing what I love doing. Every day is a new day.”
For Finney, who at 82 still writes three to four columns a week at the Times-Picayune, being honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame couldn’t have come at a better time.
“I mean it’s a nice honor, but the good part was that I’m given this award at the same time that Rickey Jackson becomes the first Saint inducted into the Hall (of Fame) and coming off the greatest season in the history of New Orleans sports. You talk about perfect timing!”
