Nine Loyola programs earn NAIA Scholar Team award

Loyola University New Orleans athletics had nine teams receive the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar Team award on July 29.
Andy Canegitta’s men’s indoor track team earned the highest GPA for Loyola with a 3.40, with the men’s outdoor track right behind with a 3.39. Also earning recognition under the direction of Canegitta were men’s cross country (3.25), women’s outdoor track (3.22), women’s indoor track (3.21) and women’s cross country (3.08).
Dr. Michael Giorlando’s men’s basketball team had the third highest mark for Loyola, finishing with a 3.26. Zubin Engineer’s women’s tennis had a 3.10 in their first season, and Tommy Harold’s women’s volleyball team rounded out the recipients with a 3.06.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average must include all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible.
A record total of 857 teams received the award for the 2009-10 school year.
