Loyola celebrates White Linen Night

August 6, 2010

Loyola joins the city as it celebrates art, music and a love for New Orleans through a White Linen Night after party catering to Loyola alumni and friends.

New Orleans’ historical White Linen Night will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, from 6 – 9 p.m. Following the art-crawl in the historic Warehouse District, Loyola alumni and friends are invited to escape the heat for the “Loyola in Linen: A White Linen Night Affair” after party.

The event will be held from 8 - 10 p.m. in the Atrium Sculpture Garden of the Renaissance Arts Hotel New Orleans, at 700 Tchoupitoulas St. Admission is $20 per person and features a sampling of New Orleans appetizers, unlimited “white beverages” including white wine, white cranberry juice, and sparkling water and live entertainment provided by talented Loyola musicians. To RSVP, visit the Loyola alumni Web site at http://alumni.loyno.edu/linen10 and register by 5 p.m. today, Friday, Aug. 6 or pay at the door.

Special university guest, Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D., dean of Loyola's College of Music and Fine Arts, will offer a brief presentation about his college.

The 16th Annual White Linen Night, presented by the New Orleans Arts District, will take place between the 300-800 blocks of Julia Street where more than 20 galleries will open their doors to the strolling crowd of linen-clad art lovers. While roaming from gallery to gallery, participants will see some of the city’s finest art offerings while sampling authentic New Orleans cuisine and enjoying live music.

The tradition of wearing white linen in New Orleans dates back to the years before air conditioning, when people wore white linen clothing to soften the effects of the summer heat. Men wore white suits and women wore white dresses to reflect, rather than absorb, the sun’s rays.

This tradition is revisited every summer in the city’s Warehouse Arts District on the first Saturday evening in August in the form of White Linen Night. Art lovers who get into the true spirit wear white outfits and white hats as they stroll leisurely along Julia Street and adjacent streets for this night of celebration.
