June 11, 2010
Loyola University New Orleans College of Law graduate, Charles Rice, J.D. ’95, has been named president and chief executive officer of Entergy New Orleans, Inc., the electric and gas utility that serves the City of New Orleans. He will begin his new role at Entergy New Orleans June 14.
Rice takes over a utility that has been recovering from Hurricane Katrina. The electric utility has since been in a growth mode with more than 75 percent, or 150,000, of its customers returning home since 2005. Rice recently helped marshal the company’s second electric rate decrease in two years, a feat that no investor-owned utility in the nation has accomplished in recent years.
“Rice’s breadth of experience both in city government, and in the private sector at Entergy and two highly regarded law firms, have provided Charles with the critical knowledge and skills required to take over the top role at Entergy New Orleans,” said Wayne Leonard, chairman and chief executive officer of Entergy Corporation. “Charles is a natural leader. He has a strong personality who leads by example and is known for his affability and calm and reason under stress. I am confident the customers and employees of Entergy New Orleans are in good hands.”
Rice joined Entergy Corp. in 2000 where he served as senior counsel in the litigation group and later as the manager of labor relations litigations support.
Between 2002 and 2005, Rice was recruited into city government as the city attorney and later took the critical role of chief administrative officer for the City of New Orleans.
In 2005, Rice was recruited back to private practice as partner at the law firm of Barrasso, Usdin, Kupperman, Freeman & Sarver, L.L.C. In January 2010, he returned to Entergy as director of regulatory affairs for Entergy New Orleans.
Rice, who is also a graduate of Howard University, served in the United States Army, where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served as a military intelligence officer with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Ky. In the Army, he earned the Airborne Badge, Air Assault Badge, Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals.
Entergy New Orleans, Inc. is an electric and gas utility serving Orleans Parish and is a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation. The company provides electricity to more than 150,000 customers and natural gas to more than 96,000 customers in Orleans Parish.
