Loyola baseball falls in GCAC Championship to No. 12 LSUS

The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team fell 17-1 in game one against No. 12 LSU-Shreveport, and the Pilots went on to win the second contest, 10-3, to clinch the GCAC Tournament Championship at Smith-Wells Stadium on Monday night.

Loyola (19-30) came into the day hitting .382 as a team in the tournament, but LSU-Shreveport (47-11) held the Wolfpack to 12 hits in the two games.

In the first game, the Pilots outhit Loyola 23-5 to force a second game. For game two, LSUS hit three home runs on their way to claiming their fourth GCAC Tournament title in the past five years.

In the opening game, the Pilots jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning. Brandon Bravata led the game off with a home run, then Kevin Smith hit his second homer of the post-season to increase the lead to four. Smith added another run in the second on an RBI double.

LSUS broke open the game with three runs each in the fifth and sixth inning to make the score 11-0.

Loyola got on the board in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Chris May. The Pilots, however, extended their lead to 17-1 with six runs in their next at-bat which included a three-run homer by Curtis Beaudoin.

Justin Ennis improved his record to 11-0 on the year. He struck out eight batters, giving up a run on four hits in seven innings.

George Smith (2-8) pitched four-plus innings in the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits. Tyler Duplantis led the Wolfpack offense with two hits.

For game two, Andrew Brouillette homered in the first for LSUS, and Loyola evened the game at 1-1 on an RBI groundout by May. The Wolfpack had the bases loaded with one out but could only bring home the one run.

The Pilots went up 4-1 in the third capped off on a two-run double by Smith, then added a run in the fifth. After plating a run in the seventh, Shawn Moy made the score 8-1 with a two-run home run.

Brooks McMinn blasted a solo home run in the eighth for the ‘Pack, then Brouillette hit his second homer of the game in the ninth for LSUS to put the score at 10-2. In Loyola’s at-bat, Slade Sanders finished off the scoring with RBI triple, making the final 10-3.

Joey Pajares (1-5) took the loss, pitching three innings, giving up five runs on three hits. Sanders and Ryan Scott led the offense with two hits each.

Corey Theroit (2-4) picked up the win, giving up a run on three hits. He finished with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.
