Loyola to honor scholar-athletes on April 26

The Loyola University New Orleans Department of Athletics and Wellness will be hosting their 6th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony on April 26. The event starts at 6 p.m. in the Danna Student Center St. Charles Room, on Loyola’s main campus.
Loyola athletics will honor 71 student-athletes who posted at least a 3.0 GPA for the 2009 calendar year. Of the 71 honorees, five student-athletes obtained a perfect 4.0, and 26 finished with at least a 3.5 GPA.
Also being honored are eight Loyola athletes who were named to the Daktronics National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar-Athlete list for obtaining a 3.5 GPA or better and being at least a junior in academic standing. Baseball had four honorees, men’s basketball finished with two, and volleyball and cross country had one each.
For team GPA, head coach Andy Canegitta’s men’s track and cross country teams had the highest marks with a 3.31 and 3.24, respectively. The reinstated women’s tennis team, in their first season since the 1990s, also had a 3.24. The men’s basketball team finished with a 3.14 with volleyball right behind at 3.13. Rounding out the teams are women’s cross country at 2.98, baseball and women’s basketball at 2.96 and women’s track at 2.92.
