College Republicans host free concert to show support for US troops
April 9, 2010
The Loyola University College Republicans will host a free concert featuring Easy Company on Friday, April 16, from 4-7 p.m. in the university Peace Quad, to show support for men and women in the United States military.
The Republicans will sell 350 pounds of donated crawfish and soft drinks at the concert to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which funds medical and financial assistance for wounded service people, and the Army Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships for the sons and daughters of veterans.
Organizers say they decided to host the event to bring attention to the continued presence of troops serving overseas and the troop surge slated for northern Afghanistan, and it is meant to be a non-partisan community gathering.
“In these challenging times, it is vital that we maintain our sense of unity and that we show love and support for our brave men and women in uniform as well as their families,” said Mohammad Iqbal, president of the Loyola University College Republicans. “We wish to continue to show them that this community cares.”
In addition to the concert, organizers have arranged for a series of speakers to talk about the troops.
