International Student Association hosts 8th annual scholarship banquet
March 12, 2010
Ever heard of “tinikling?”
The Loyola University New Orleans community will get a chance to learn about this form of traditional Filipino dancing, named for the movement a large bird makes in rice fields, as well as Filipino politics and history, during the International Student Scholarship Banquet on Friday, March 19, at 6 p.m., in the Danna Student Center St. Charles Room.
The scholarship banquet is an annual fundraiser for non-resident students on F-1 visas who are ineligible for need-based or federal financial aid. Each year, the International Student Association and the Center for International Education, which sponsor the banquet, highlight a country to showcase and celebrate its food, culture and crafts. This year, attendees are invited to “experience the Philippines.”
Tickets are $20 each or $35 per couple, and $140 for a table of 8. All proceeds benefit the International Student Scholarship Fund.
Loyola’s own Al Alcazar, director of Urban Partners and editor of the Blueprint for Social Justice for the Twomey Center for Peace Through Justice, will keynote the banquet with a presentation on the Philippines and his work in New Orleans. Alcazar came to the United States in the early 1970s as a political refugee fleeing the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. He has been active in peace and social/ecological justice work for the past 38 years and has worked at Loyola for 25 years.
