March 5, 2010
On March 18, Loyola University New Orleans will host “¡Juntos! A Forum on Latino New Orleans,” featuring panelists from service agencies which directly engage the growing local Latino population. Representatives from health services, community advocacy groups, language access and immigration services, among others, will share their experiences working to improve the quality of life of Latinos and Latinas.
The event takes place Thursday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the St. Charles Room of the Danna Student Center. It is free and open to the public. English-Spanish interpretation will be available.
“This forum is an opportunity for the Loyola community to hear about the needs and assets of the Latino community and to learn about the various ongoing collaborations between the university and the agencies,” said Uriel Quesada, director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Loyola.
The panel of experts include Jamie McDaniel, social services director of Latino Apostolate of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana; Lucas Diaz, executive director of Puentes, Inc.; Anna Frachou, assistant director and LatiNola coordinator of Puentes, Inc.; Katrina Badger, co-chair of Language Access Coalition and director of the language access program at ReachNOLA; Dr. Rodrigo Gamarra, director of the Louisiana Office of Public Health’s Latino Outreach Project; Narda Hernandez, director of the Common Ground Health Clinic’s Latino Health Outreach Project; Laila Hlass, staff attorney for the Loyola Immigration Law Clinic; and Jacinta Gonzalez, organizer for the Congress of Day Laborers.
While the forum will be conducted in English, those who need Spanish translation will have access to a pool of student translators. The forum is sponsored by Loyola’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Office of Service Learning.
