College of Law provides free tax help for low-income tax payers

The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law is again offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program this year to provide free tax preparation assistance for people with low to moderate incomes.

The sessions, designed by the Internal Revenue Service, continue through Monday, April 12. Hours for the tax preparation sessions are Saturdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and Mondays and Thursdays, from 5-7 p.m. The VITA office is located at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, Broadway Activities Center, 501 Pine St., Room 202. There will not be sessions on the Saturday and Monday before Mardi Gras, Feb. 13 and Feb. 15, as well as the day before Easter, April 3.

Tax preparation services for members of the Spanish-speaking community will be offered by appointment on Saturdays at the Pine Street location.

VITA will also offer tax preparation again this year at the Community Center of St. Bernard Parish, located at 1107 LeBeau St., Arabi, LA 70032 on the following Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2p.m.: Jan. 30, Feb. 27, March 13 and 27 and April 10.

Additionally, VITA is bringing its program to New Orleans East for the first time from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the following dates:

· Feb. 6 and March 20 at VIET, 4655 Michoud Blvd., Suite 17, New Orleans, LA 70129 (Call 504-255-0400 for more information).

· March 6 at the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Center, 4626 Alcee Fortier Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70129 (Call 504-255-9170 for more information).

· Feb. 20 at the Tet Festival, a celebration of the Vietnamese new year, Mary Queen of Vietnam Church, 14001 Dwyer Road, New Orleans, LA 70129 (Call 504-254-5660 for more info).

Those attending tax preparation sessions should bring identification, Social Security cards for each member of their household, tax returns and all other tax documents, including W-2 forms, 1099 forms and Social Security statements.
