December 11, 2009
The Loyola University New Orleans men’s basketball team had four players in double figures as they defeated the University of St. Thomas in Houston, 71-67 at the Jerabeck Athletic Center on Dec 5.
Loyola (6-2) was led by Ryan Brock and Corey Gray with 12 points, while Torry Beaulieu and Sean Bennett added 10 each. Cameron Cates came off the bench for nine points.
With the Wolfpack up 12 with 3:40 remaining, St. Thomas put together a late 14-4 run to make the score 69-67. The Celts’ Travis Lampley, who finished with a game-high 19 points, scored the last nine for the Celts. After two free throws by Loyola’s Brock with 19.1 seconds left, Darrinton Moncrieffe blocked a Lampley shot as the Wolfpack held on for the win.
Both teams started out slow offensively, with St. Thomas (2-8) grabbing a 13-12 lead. Bennett then put Loyola ahead 15-13 at the 10:18 mark with his third three of the game.
With Loyola up 28-21, St. Thomas went on an 8-0 run to take the lead with 1:21 to go, and went into the half with a 31-30 lead.
Loyola opened up the second half with an 11-2 run, sparked by a Moncrieffe alley-oop from Bennett. Midway through the half, a basket by Robert Manson gave Loyola a 53-41 lead.
The Wolfpack continued to hold a comfortable lead before St. Thomas’ last minute rally, extending the advantage back to 12 at 65-53 on a tip-in by Moncrieffe with 3:40 left. After the Celts scored seven straight points, Loyola staved off the comeback by hitting six free throws, winning 71-67.
Loyola finished the game shooting 46.3 percent, while holding St. Thomas to 40.0 percent. The Wolfpack held a slight advantage on the boards, 40-38.
Loyola returns to action on Dec. 19 when they head to Cleveland, Miss., to face Delta State University at 7 p.m. Loyola fell in overtime earlier this season to Delta State, 97-96 at The Den.
