Loyola Northshore Alumni Chapter sponsors holiday event in Covington

The Northshore Alumni Chapter of the Loyola University New Orleans Alumni Association will sponsor a holiday cocktail and dinner party for alumni, parents and friends on Friday, Dec. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., at LOLA Restaurant, 517 N. New Hampshire St., Covington, La. Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D., dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts, will be the featured guest.
Event entry is $35 per person and includes a buffet dinner, drinks and live music.
Boomgaarden is a noted historian of 18th century opera, music aesthetics and harmonic theory. He has enjoyed an extensive career as a composer, pianist and choral conductor and has worked as a liturgical musician in the United States and Europe.
Boomgaarden attended the Eastman School of Music and the University of Vienna, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He is also a graduate of Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education.
Prior to coming to New Orleans, Boomgaarden was the assistant vice president for academic affairs at Loyola University Maryland. He served as chair of the music department and later as assistant to the provost at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His teaching career also includes positions at Ithaca College and the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Salzburg.
Along with his book, “Musical Thought in Eighteenth-Century Britain and Germany,” Boomgaarden has published articles in “The New Grove Dictionary” and “The New Grove Dictionary of Opera,” the “British Dictionary of National Biography,” and articles and reviews in many scholarly journals. His special interests include American Folk music. He has appeared professionally as a fiddle player and singer of bluegrass music, and he has taught courses in American Roots Music.
