November 20, 2009

The Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team opened their season on Nov. 16, and freshman Madeline Gagneaux’s 18 points led the Wolfpack to a 82-64 victory over the Wiley Lady Wildcats at Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas.

Gagneaux scored 12 points in the first half, as Loyola rolled out to a 42-23 lead at the intermission. In the second half, Wiley mounted a comeback thanks to five three-pointers from Ueronica Cleveland, who finished tied with a game-high 20 points.

To start the game, Loyola went up 14-5 after a three by Gagnaeaux at the 15:30 mark. After being down 23-7, Wiley’s Whitney Goard, who also had a game-high 20 points, scored the next nine points to put the game at 23-16.

Loyola ended the half on a 19-7 run, which included seven points from junior Rachael Nolan, to take a commanding 19-point lead into the break.

Loyola’s lead grew to 65-36 with 7:48 left in the game, then Cleveland hit four threes in the next three minutes and put the score at 71-56. The Wolfpack would go on to win 82-64.

Along with Gagneaux, who was 8 of 14 from the field and 2 of 2 from three, Loyola was led by Nolan and sophomore Keiva Council who added 13 points a piece. Council led the team with eight rebounds.

“I thought we got some great production from our post players,” said head coach Kellie Kennedy. “I was impressed how Madeline stepped up and led the team in points and offensive rebounds (4).”

Wiley was led by Goard and Cleveland with 20 points each. Wiley shot 31.7 percent from the field, while Loyola finished at 46 percent.

Loyola returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 22, when they host Allen University at The Den at 1 p.m.
