International Student Association hosts Country Fair

October 23, 2009

Where did the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago get its name? Who started the 365-day calendar? Which country’s national symbol is an eagle eating a snake?

Find out the answers to these and many questions at Loyola University New Orleans’ annual Country Fair, Friday, Oct. 30. The free fair, featuring live African drummers, dancers and stilt walkers, food from around the world and displays from more than 25 countries, takes place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Peace Quad and is free. In case of rain, festivities will move inside the Danna Student Center in the St. Charles Room.

The International Student Association and the Center for International Education sponsor the fair to introduce the campus community to different countries’ cultures and to raise money for the International Student Scholarship Fund. Organizers will sell raffle tickets at the fair to benefit the fund and in the days leading up to the fair in Mercy Hall, Room 301.

During the fair, Loyola students will set up tables showcasing a variety of items from either their home countries, or countries in which they have studied, including flags, photographs, native clothing and other artifacts. Meanwhile, the Kumbuka African Drum and Dance Collective will perform traditional dances and music from the east and west coasts of Africa, a dance of the market women from the Congo, and war dances from South Africa.
