Law professor launches ethics resource Web site
October 16, 2009
Loyola University New Orleans College of Law professor Dane S. Ciolino has launched a new Web site, Louisiana Legal Ethics, designed to be a convenient ethics resource for Louisiana judges, lawyers and law students.
The Web site includes a blog that discusses recent developments in Louisiana’s legal ethics standards. It also provides reports and analyses of recent laws, regulations, cases and administrative decisions relating to legal and judicial ethics in Louisiana, including developments in discipline, malpractice, fees and disqualification. Although the blog focuses on Louisiana legal ethics, developments in the practice of law on the federal level and in other states are featured when those developments are relevant in Louisiana.
Much of the content on the site comes from the book “Louisiana Professional Responsibility Law and Practice,” edited by Ciolino and published by the Louisiana State Bar Association from 2001-07.
Ciolino said he was eager to make the information more accessible.
“I wanted to convert the book to an online format so that I could provide it free of charge to Louisiana lawyers. I also wanted the ability to update it on the fly to reflect the rapidly changing standards governing lawyer conduct,” Ciolino said. “To make it even more readily accessible, the site is also formatted for use on mobile devices, including the iPhone.”
The new Web site is the product of several hundred man hours logged by Ciolino, his research assistants and nearly 150 Loyola law students. He said he will eventually offer free continuing legal education videos that will qualify for Louisiana MCLE ethics and professionalism credit.
In addition to the Web site, Ciolino has created a Twitter account called “Developing Ethics News,” which provides links to reports on similar matters. It can be followed here.
Ciolino serves as the Alvin R. Christovich Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. His current scholarly and teaching interests at Loyola include professional responsibility, trial advocacy and criminal law.
