Political science students honored by city for their research

Three Loyola University New Orleans political science students were honored with an official proclamation by the New Orleans City Council for their policy brief, “Customer Service in New Orleans, Louisiana.” Alexandra Hoover, Julie Sisson and David Zoller, all students in professor Peter Burns’ policy research class in the College of Social Sciences, received the proclamation last month.
For the class, students prepare reports on high-interest policy topics chosen by city officials. Councilman-at-Large Arnie Fielkow requested the brief on customer service in New Orleans, which the students provided on Aug. 27.
Burns is proud of his students’ work and dedication to the city.
“These students used their incredible minds to help rebuild New Orleans,” Burns said. “They used their critical thinking and research skills to write a policy report that can enhance how the city interacts with its citizens. This kind of service exemplifies Loyola's commitment to New Orleans.”
Loyola students have a solid track record of presenting policy research at City Hall. Last May, Burns’ students researched the city’s ad valorem tax and taxicab policies and testified about their findings before the City Council Governmental Affairs Committee. Prior to that, students presented a report on the city’s request for proposals process to Recovery Chief Ed Blakely and researched school governance, road repair and maintenance in New Orleans for city officials.
