Loyola volleyball outlasts Lady Blazers

The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team, playing its first home match of the season at the Den, defeated the Belhaven Lady Blazers 3-2 on Tuesday night.
The Wolfpack took the first game 25-18. Freshman Ashley Abendschein, who finished the night with 19 kills, started out the scoring, tallying four kills in the early going.
In the second game, Gina Gill scored six of the last eight Wolfpack points with four kills an ace, and a block. Loyola closed out the set on a 10-3 run, taking the game 25-16.
The third set was back and forth throughout, with the Lady Blazers using a 7-3 run to close out the game, winning 25-23.
In the fourth set, Loyola was in great shape, leading 22-20. Belhaven, however, would score five unanswered points for the 25-22 victory to even up the match at two all.
Sophomore Gina Gill and Abendschein took control of the final set, registering four kills each, as Loyola won the game 15-12 to take the match.
Abendschein’s 19 kills led the Loyola attack, with Gill adding 14, and freshman Rachael Roth, who had four aces, chipping in with nine kills. Abendschein also led with 18 digs, and sophomore Amanda Oldani tallied 10. Freshman Samantha Worsham had 39 assists and six kills.
For Belhaven (8-9, 0-1), Christina Jaques led with 21 kills, and Christina Atwood had 6. Defensively, Erin Thompson had 21 digs while Jessica Davis added 19.
