Former FDA commissioner to speak at Loyola President's Forum Oct. 12
September 25, 2009
Loyola University New Orleans welcomes Andrew von Eschenbach, M.D., on Monday, Oct. 12, to present “Transforming Health Care in the 21st Century: The New Reality.” His lecture, part of the 2009 Loyola President’s Forum Series, takes place at 7 p.m., in Monroe Hall’s Nunemaker Auditorium on Loyola’s main campus.
A former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, von Eschenbach is credited with helping to modernize the agency and take advantage of emerging technologies to protect and promote public health. He will discuss advances in science and technology that have radically transformed the practice of modern medicine and how scientific breakthroughs present new opportunities for treatment, options for care and a growing list of questions about how changes will impact lives in the 21st century.
Von Eschenbach, who is a world-renowned urological surgeon and cancer expert, resigned from the FDA in January to become senior adviser to Greenleaf Health, L.L.C., a regulatory consulting firm that provides guidance for companies developing innovative solutions to pressing public health challenges around the world.
Prior to the FDA, von Eschenbach was director of the National Cancer Institute, where he focused on using new technologies in the approach to treating cancer. In his professional career, von Eschenbach has also served in a variety of leadership positions at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he still teaches today.
In 2006, von Eschenbach was named one of Time magazine’s “100 most influential people to shape the world,” and Modern Healthcare named him one of its “50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare” in both 2007 and 2008.
The Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., said von Eschenbach’s lecture is perfectly timed, as the nation struggles with the future of healthcare.
“Von Eschenbach has a wealth of knowledge on the healthcare delivery system,” Wildes said. “His talk should be informative and interesting to anyone who is seriously engaged in the healthcare debate.”
