Residential Life encourages students to donate reusable goods and textbooks
May 1, 2009
The Office of Residential Life will kick off a year-end recycling campaign on Friday, May 1, and is asking students to donate their reusable goods and old textbooks rather than tossing them in the trash.
For the book recycling drive, Residential Life is partnering with Better World Books, an international book recycling organization with connections in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Students can participate in the book buy-back program through the University Bookstore as usual, but are strongly encouraged to donate any book that the bookstore will not purchase to the recycling drive. Collection boxes will be located near the book buy-back area in the bookstore and in each residence hall lobby.
Better World Books, with the help of universities across the country, collects and sells used books to help global literacy programs. This year, Residential Life has chosen to have the recycling campaign proceeds benefit Invisible Children, a nonprofit organization that supports the safety and literacy of children in the war-torn areas of Uganda and one of the five literacy programs receiving help from Better World Books.
During the recycling campaign, students departing for the summer are also encouraged to donate any unwanted reusable goods such as clothing, shoes, school supplies, lamps, small furniture and appliances. There will be a large donation collection truck in the Mercy Hall parking lot from Friday, May 1 – Saturday, May 9.
On Monday, May 11, members of Loyola community can rummage through all of the donated materials from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., and take whatever they would like. All remaining items will be donated to the community. Last year, Residential Life filled a 17-foot truck and donated all of the materials to the Bywater Church of Christ in the Ninth Ward.
