Class of 2007 gift installed on campus
April 24, 2009
Last week, a gift from the Loyola University New Orleans Class of 2007 was unveiled between the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library and the Jesuit Ideals Walkway.
The gift, a French Quarter Howard Clock, is a round-faced aluminum post clock that illuminates at night. Its intent is more than a timepiece, however. While the clock is a functional art piece, the Class of 2007 also hopes it will serve as a Peace Quad meeting spot for future generations of students and as a reminder of the Class of 2007.
The purchase and installation of this clock, part of the Loyola Senior Class Gift campaign tradition, required a two-year fundraising and planning effort. The campaign, started by the seniors of the Class of 1998, is a student-led project that unites seniors to give back to Loyola in support of undergraduate education. The program gives graduating seniors a chance to say “thank you” to Loyola while leaving behind a legacy for future students to enjoy.
Past gifts to Loyola include the dedication of trees in the Palm Court, an annual scholarship, a replica of the Loyola seal in the Palm Court, a donation of books to the Monroe Library, the Jesuit Ideals stepping-stones and a streetcar sculpture. This year, the Class of 2009 is raising funds for a functional art piece to be placed in the Sculpture Garden to honor the colleges and universities who opened their hearts and their doors to Loyola students in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
