1718 reading series features New York Times journalist and memoirist

March 27, 2009

The 1718 series will continue next week featuring New York Times journalist and memoirist David Carr. Carr will present a reading from his memoir, “The Night of the Gun,” on Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m., at the Columns Hotel, located at 3811 Saint Charles Ave.

Carr’s memoir, which details his past experiences with drug addiction, was excerpted in The New York Times Magazine and became an instant bestseller. Carr spent two years compiling information on himself for “The Night of the Gun,” constructing the memoir almost as an investigative article on himself. Carr interviewed friends and acquaintances familiar with his past and researched his own medical and criminal records, to “make sense,” he said, of the past he had mostly forgotten.

Carr writes a column for the Monday Business section of the New York Times which focuses on media issues including print, digital, film, radio and television. He also works as a general assignment reporter in the Culture section of The New York Times covering all aspects of popular culture.

According to Mark Yakich, associate professor of English at Loyola and faculty adviser for the program, the 1718 reading series is directed by students from Loyola, Tulane University and the University of New Orleans. The three-year-old series is a one-of-a-kind collaboration among these students.

Each 1718 reading features one established poet or writer reading alongside several student writers from the New Orleans area. Past guests include Christine Wiltz, Poppy Z. Brite, Bev Marshall, John Biguenet and Andrei Codrescu.
