College of Business sophomore sets sights on Wall Street

March 27, 2009

Ricardo Rivera, a sophomore in the Loyola University New Orleans College of Business, has been awarded a two-year academic scholarship and paid summer internship by the Richard B. Fisher Scholars Program at Morgan Stanley. The program is designed to aid qualified undergraduate, underrepresented minority students. Rivera will intern in Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities and Information Technology department in the summer of 2010.

Rivera, who is a native of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, found out about the program through a fellow business student, Laura Reynolds, who is also a Richard B. Fisher scholar. He said his research work with finance professor Ron Christner, Ph.D., strong interviews and a 4.0 grade point average contributed to his selection for the program. Rivera was also invited to intern this summer with Goldman Sachs in New York.

Rivera credited Loyola’s College of Business for preparing him to succeed in a competitive, changing business environment.

“Loyola has prepared me by giving me the tools to analyze the market and understand the trends that are more predominant these days,” Rivera said.

Business acumen runs in the Rivera family. Rivera’s eldest brother, Fernando works at Goldman Sachs, and brothers Osmin and Jorge work at Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Chase, respectively. All of the Rivera brothers attended Loyola University New Orleans.

“Fernando, my eldest brother, has always been a mentor and a role model for all of us,” Rivera said. “We were motivated by seeing his passion for the markets and his ambition to succeed.”

Rivera is slated to graduate in May 2011.
