Loyola baseball sweeps Tougaloo

Loyola swept a doubleheader from Tougaloo on Sunday, March 15, at Smith Wills Stadium.

In the first game, Chucky Benach (2-5) pitched a complete game four hit shutout for the victory as Loyola won in five innings, 10-0. Benach struck out five in the winning effort. Lucas Wendt, Brooks McMinn and Mike Kelly each had two hits.

Vernon Sims was tagged with the loss for Tougaloo. He threw four innings giving up seven runs on eight hits and striking out one. Brett Stegall was 2-for-2 for the Bulldogs to lead at the plate.

Loyola got on the board in the top of the second as Lucas Wendt’s two out double plated Mike Kelly. The Wolfpack extended the lead with three runs in each of the next three innings.

In game two, Taylor Domengeaux was 3 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Wolfpack wrapped up the sweep with a 10-4 victory.

Trey Campeaux (2-0) picked up the victory for Loyola (7-20, 6-14 GCAC). He entered in the fifth inning and struck out two in 3.2 innings of work. Matt Wendt had two hits and two RBI’s in the game.

For Tougaloo (1-23, 0-18 GCAC), Lanford Porter led at the plate going 3-for-4. Michael Spann was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out two.

Loyola broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth as Brooks McMinn led the frame off with a double and later scored on a Tougaloo error. Later in the inning, Patrick Whelan scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Kelly to make the score 6-4. The Wolfpack added two runs in the seventh and took control with four runs in the eighth.

The Wolfpack returns to action with a three-game series against Belhaven in Jackson. Tonight’s tilt is slated for 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at Smith Wills.
