Lusher Charter School tops Silver Scribe Competition

March 13, 2009

Silver Scribe winner, Lusher junior Susannah Albert-Chandhok, with Dr. Larry Lorenz, A. Louis Read Distinguished Professor in Mass Communication.

Susannah Albert-Chandhok of Lusher Charter School won the Silver Scribe Grand Award in the annual Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition for high school journalists held Saturday, March 7, at Loyola University New Orleans College of Social Sciences.

“I’m stunned, I’m so thrilled,” a teary Albert-Chandhok said. She also placed first in feature writing and second in both editorial writing and column writing. Albert-Chandhok, a junior, is the arts and community editor for Lusher’s newspaper, The Post-Deluvian.

The Post-Deluvian won best newspaper, and Lusher, despite having the fewest students participating in the contest, won the Sweepstakes Award for most points amassed by students from one school. This was also Lusher’s first year competing at the Silver Scribe.

“I guess they sent their superstars,” said Loyola's Dr. Larry Lorenz, A. Louis Read Distinguished Professor in Mass Communication, who was in charge of the contest for Loyola.

“This is the product of enormous discipline and focus on the part of our students,” said Post-Deluvian Faculty Adviser Michael Depp. “I am very proud.”

Nearly 40 students from five New Orleans schools took part in the day-long competition, which was co-sponsored by the Press Club of New Orleans and Loyola’s School of Mass Communication in the College of Social Sciences. The event is named after its founder, the late Tom Bell, a long-time Loyola journalism professor and a former New Orleans Press Club president.
