Loyola hosts guest concert and masterclass with UL-Lafayette flutist and professor

Andrea Loewy, D.M.A., the Heymann II Endowed Professor of Flute and Theory and graduate studies coordinator at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will visit Loyola University New Orleans on Tuesday, March 10, to give a masterclass and performance.

Loewy’s masterclass will begin at 5:30 p.m., in the Communications/Music Complex, Room 230. Three Loyola flute students, Keisha Slaughter, Cecilia Burns and Hilary Jones, will perform for Loewy.

A solo flute and piano recital will follow in Nunemaker Auditorium, located in Monroe Hall, at 7:30 p.m.

Loewy and pianist Yuling Huang-Davie, D.M.A., will perform the music of Michel Blavet, Philippe Gaubert, Daniel Perttu and Eldin Burton. Admission to both events is free and open to the public.

Loewy holds a bachelor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music, a master of music degree from Emporia State University and a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Memphis. Her teachers have included Joseph Mariano, Harold Bennett, John Heiss, Samuel Baron, Phillip Kaplan and Bruce Erskine.

Loewy played with the Mid-America Woodwind Quintet and was co-principal flutist of the Orchestra of the State of Mexico. She is currently principal flutist of the Acadiana Symphony, and has played several concertos with the orchestra.

She recently released an album with Centaur Records, “Apparitions and Whimsies,” featuring 20th-century compositions for flute, and has presented concerts and classes both at the national and international levels.
