Mainguy's double-double gives Loyola win over Dillard

Wolfpack forward Christine Mainguy notched her second double-double on the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds as Loyola defeated Dillard 79-60 Thursday night at The Den.

Dillard took their only lead of the game on a basket by Chayla Green to make it 2-0 Lady Blue Devils a minute into the contest.

Loyola responded with a 9-0 run with the final basket coming on a Trenell Smith fast break lay-in to make it 9-2 Wolfpack with 15:30 left in the first half. The ‘Pack would lead the rest of the way.

Later, the lead grew to double digits with a pair of Trenell Smith free throws with 8:30 left in the period to make the score19-9.

Loyola captured their largest margin of the stanza at 21 points three times, the last following a Trenese Smith basket that made it 37-16 with just under a minute left before halftime.

Trenese Smith, who was GCAC Player of the Week last week, led the way for Loyola with 17 points and nine rebounds. Garkeiva Council came off the bench to score 16 points. Christine Mainguy scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double on the season. Her earlier double-double came in a loss against Lambuth. Trenell Smith rounded out the scoring leaders for the Wolfpack with 12 points.

The Wolfpack (17-6, 13-2 GCAC) used 50 percent shooting (26 of 52) from the field to win their seventh straight victory, the longest winning streak of the season for Loyola. The Wolfpack also won the glass, out-rebounding Dillard 48-33.

Ariel Mitchell had the game-high 22 points. Lauren Daniel added 14 while Meaquell Lewis dropped in 13 points. The Lady Blue Devils (8-19, 4-11 GCAC) shot for a 34.3 percent clip (23 of 67).

The Wolfpack take their final road trip of the regular season this Saturday night as Loyola travels to Jackson, Miss., to take on the Belhaven Lady Blazers. Tip time is set for 5 p.m. at the Charles R. Rugg Arena.
