Big first half propels Loyola to back-to-back winning seasons

February 20, 2009

The Wolfpack men’s basketball scored 53 first half points on 75.9 percent shooting as the team secured Loyola’s first back-to-back winning seasons since the 1970-71 and 1971-72 campaigns, defeating the Dillard Blue Devils 83-67 Thursday night at The Den.

After Dillard’s Autrail Manning ran the opening tip down for a quick 2-0 Blue Devil lead, Ryan Brock started a 34-7 Loyola run with a mid-range jumper to tie the game. The run took almost 10 minutes off the clock and ended with a Sean Bennett three pointer for a 34-9 Wolfpack lead, their largest of the half. Loyola went to the halftime locker room up 53-34.

A Nick Tuszynski lay-in with just less than six minutes left in the game gave Loyola their largest advantage of the contest at 27 points, 77-50. Dillard could only get as close as 14 points with 1:30 left after a Elliot Dowell basket made it 80-66 Wolfpack.

Ryan Brock led all scorers with 23 points. Sean Bennett added 12 to round out the scoring leaders as Loyola used a balanced offensive attack. Darrinton Moncrieffe added nine points, nine rebounds and swatted away three Blue Devil shots.

Along with the 75.9 percent shooting overall in the first half, the Wolfpack (16-10, 9-6 GCAC) hit 55.6 percent from above the arc. Loyola finished the game hitting on 63.5 percent (33 of 52) from the field and 54.5 percent (6 of 11) from the land of plenty. Loyola owned the paint, outscoring the Blue Devils 40-22 from in the interior.

David Manning led the way for Dillard with 15 points. Cornice Wingate and Autrail Manning each put in 11 points. The Blue Devils (10-15, 7-8) shot for 40 percent overall (22 of 55) and 28.6 percent (8 of 28) from above the arc.

The Wolfpack take to the road for the final time of the regular season, going to Jackson, Miss., to take on the Belhaven Blazers. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at Charles R. Rugg Arena and can be heard on WGSO 990 AM or on the Internet at www.wgso.com.
