Loyola student receives Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award

Danish Siddiqui, a pre-med biology senior at Loyola University New Orleans, was a recent recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award at the 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Week for Peace celebration hosted by Loyola, Xavier, Tulane and Dillard universities.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award recognizes outstanding students who participate in community service projects and who exemplify the principles, standards and ideology of King. Siddiqui was one of four students who received the award at the Jan. 21 convocation at Xavier.

To meet eligibility requirements, the recipients had to be a full-time student of one of the hosting universities; be in good academic standing; have good moral character, displaying attributes such as honesty, fairness, conscientiousness, compassion and diplomatic skills; have a good community service background; perform a consistent record of community service during her university career; and be dedicated to the improvement of the community.

Siddiqui, who is president of Loyola’s Muslim Students Association, has maintained an impeccable academic record and has volunteered in numerous community projects both here and abroad. Siddiqui, who was born in Pakistan, has helped at battered women’s shelters there, and she has provided supplies to the homeless under the Claiborne overpass and has volunteered at Claiborne Medical Center in New Orleans.
