Smith's 20 leads Pack Past Xavier

Trenese Smith led the Wolfpack with a game-high 20 points as Loyola University New Orleans defeated Xavier University of Louisiana 66-51 in women’s basketball Wednesday evening in The Den.
Loyola opened the contest with a 16-0 run over the first seven minutes. Trenese Smith hit three triples during the run and scored eleven of the Wolfpack’s first 16 points. She had 14 points in the opening stanza, including four three pointers.
Xavier cut the lead to five points on a three pointer by Shayla Boyd with 5:50 remaining in the half to make the score 22-17. The Gold Nuggets would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Wolfpack outscored the Nuggets 11-3 to close out the half as the teams went to the locker room with Loyola leading 33-20.
In the second half, Xavier could pull no closer than nine points. The last time came with 13:04 remaining in the game on a three pointer by Brandi Young to make the score 42-33.
Loyola quickly extended the margin to 19 points culminating with a basket by Christine Mainguy at the 8:07 mark.
The Wolfpack held the double digit advantage the rest of the way. Xavier pulled to 11 points 59-48 with 2:52 left as Johnna Williams converted a pair of free throws. Loyola outscored Xavier 7-2 to close out the victory.
Trenese Smith led the Wolfpack (12-6, 8-2 GCAC) with a game high 20 points. The junior from LaPlace hit 7 of 17 from the field and 6 of 10 from behind the arc. It was the seventh game in a row that Smith scored in double figures.
Other leaders for Loyola included Trenell Smith with 15 points. She added a season high eight assists. Christine Mainguy added 10 points and grabbed a team high eight rebounds.
The victory for the Wolfpack avenged a 49-42 loss to the Gold Rush on Jan. 29 in The Barn as well as snapped Xavier’s five-game win streak.
For Xavier (16-6, 7-3 GCAC), Shayla Boyd was the lone Nugget in double figures. She came off the bench to score 10 points. Johnna Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The victory moved Loyola a half game out of first place behind LSU-Shreveport. The Wolfpack came into the contest in a three-way tie for second place with Xavier and William Carey. Loyola and Xavier are both receiving votes in the latest NAIA women’s hoops poll.
Loyola travels to the University of Mobile Saturday evening. Tip-off in Pharr Gymnasium is set for 5 p.m.
