College of Business introduces freshmen to business mentors
January 30, 2009
The Loyola University New Orleans Joseph A. Butt, S.J., College of Business and the Career Development Center hosted the Executive Mentor Networking Night on Thursday, Jan. 22, which introduced college freshmen to professionals in the business community in a social setting. This is the second time the College of Business has hosted the event, and it will continue as a signature annual event of the Executive Mentoring Program every spring.
The Executive Mentoring Program pairs each student with his own business mentor at the beginning of the academic year. Students meet with mentors monthly to talk and receive advice about real-life work situations and their business studies.
The Career Development Center coached 140 freshman business students on important elements of networking, including selecting proper business attire, making a first impression and crafting an “elevator speech” to describe themselves. Each student was required to obtain five business cards from the 30 invited mentors and post an entry on the College of Business blog about the event.
Feedback from business students, mentors and College of Business faculty who attended was overwhelmingly positive.
“What the students loved about the event is that they got to meet mentors other than their own, who represented many other career opportunities,” said Michelle Johnston, Ph.D., director of the Executive Mentoring Program.
“Personally, I was so impressed with the students and the way they sold themselves. They were truly professional.”
