January 16, 2009
The Loyola University New Orleans men’s team received votes in the latest 2008-09 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Loyola earned 33 points, making them the 29th ranked team in the country. The Wolfpack opened up conference play with two hard fought road victories over Dillard and William Carey. Loyola’s current record is 9-4, 2-0 in the GCAC.
LSU-Shreveport (9-5) is the only team in the GCAC in the Top 25 Poll, tying Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) for the 24th spot.
Southern Polytechnic State University (13-4) is ranked 12th. Loyola defeated the Runnin’ Hornets earlier this season at The Den, 86-78.
The poll was released Jan. 12, and is conducted by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The last time Loyola received votes in the NAIA poll was Jan. 23, 2008.
Comments from head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando: “It is flattering to be receiving votes and national recognition but we still have a lot of games left to be played. We will use this as motivation to stay focused on our goals as we prepare for our next opponents this week.”
