Loyola baseball picked sixth in GCAC pre-season poll

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference recently announced the 2009 Baseball Pre-Season poll, conducted by the coaches and sports information directors of the participating schools.
After finishing 18-33 overall last season, 10-24 in conference, Loyola University New Orleans was picked to finish sixth in conference. Loyola received 22 points, falling four points short of fifth, occupied by Spring Hill.
LSU-Shreveport received 57 points and seven first place votes to barely edge out Mobile for the top spot. LSUS finished 47-16, 26-10 in conference last season and won their third consecutive GCAC Tournament championship.
Mobile was ranked second, receiving 55 points and 5 first place votes. Mobile set a school record last season with 43 wins while only losing 16. The Rams also won the Regular Season GCAC title with a 30-5 record.
Belhaven took third in the pre-season poll, followed by William Carey, Spring Hill, Loyola and Tougaloo.
Three teams in the GCAC are ranked in the 2009 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Preseason Top-25 Poll. Mobile is the highest ranked team at ninth place, followed by LSUS (15th) and Belhaven (25th).
The Wolfpack begin their season on Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at Segnette Field, hosting Tougaloo for one game Friday, then a double header on Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 1 p.m.
