Peace committee calls for student projects on world peace

December 5, 2008

The Student Coordinating Committee for World Peace at Loyola University New Orleans will host the first annual Student Peace Conference, an interdisciplinary summit dedicated to global peace, the week of March 23.

In an effort to create a peaceful and just world for all, this conference will offer students of all colleges and universities in the New Orleans area an opportunity to explore the multifaceted meanings of peace and conflict from a variety of perspectives.

Along with speakers, community action programs and cultural events, there will be an academic component in which all students are invited to present a paper or project on the subject of peace. Individual or collective papers or projects (in any form: artistic, cultural or social) from any discipline are encouraged. The paper or project should deal with one of the many problems related to world peace today. The committee hopes to provide at least three different workshops to prepare interested students for the conference and is in the process of recruiting faculty members to serve as discussion facilitators.

The conference objectives include:

  • Promote student creativity.
  • Promote student research skills.
  • Encourage students to consider viable solutions to problems of violence and conflict existing in our homes, communities and world.
  • Provide an opportunity for undergraduate research publications.

Submissions from students will be accepted via Blackboard course "Student Conference on World Peace." To apply, click on the “Abstract submission” section of Blackboard and submit a 250-word abstract explaining the proposal or topic. Submissions from non-Loyola eligible students should be e-mailed to peacecon@loyno.edu. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 15.
