Loyola duo named GCAC players of the week

The Gulf Coast Atlantic Conference named Ryan Brock and Trenese Smith Player of the Week for men’s and women’s basketball, respectively, for the week ending Nov. 29.
Brock, the 6-3 sophomore guard, scored 17 points in the Wolfpack’s first loss of the season, falling to Berry College 60-73 in Rome, Ga., this past Saturday. The Brother Martin alum was 7 of 18 from the field, grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds and also had 3 steals.
The Wolfpack and Brock, who is currently 15th in the NAIA in scoring (20.67 ppg), will return to action on Dec. 13, when they travel to Florence, Miss., to face Wesley College at 7 p.m.
Smith was rewarded for her outstanding effort this past weekend in the Nationwide Classic, leading the Wolfpack to their first win of the season. In Friday’s victory over Cumberland University, she scored 31 points on 9 of 19 from the field, connected on 12 of 14 free throws and had 8 assists. Smith also contributed defensively with 6 rebounds and 6 steals.
In the rematch with Freed Hardeman, the LaPlace native scored 26 points on 9 of 17 shooting, including two baskets behind the arc. She also collected 9 rebounds and had 3 assists. Smith is currently 9th in the NAIA in scoring with 21.4 ppg. She was also named to the Nationwide Classic All-Tournament team.
Smith shared this week’s honor on the women’s side with Xavier’s Johnna Williams.
The Wolfpack women will return to action this Saturday against Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. The tip-off for the game is at 2 p.m.
