Loyola clinches share of GCAC regular season title with comeback win

November 7, 2008

The Loyola volleyball team earned a share of the GCAC regular season title by storming back from a two sets to none deficit to upset the 22nd ranked Mobile Rams 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-9) on Senior Night, Tuesday at The Den.

In the deciding set, the Wolfpack (15-8, 7-1 GCAC) stormed out to a 5-0 lead, the fifth point coming on a Sarah Howard kill. The Lady Rams (30-3, 7-1 GCAC) responded to make it a one point affair, following a Cassy Johnson kill to cut the lead to 7-6 Loyola.

However, the Wolfpack answered with a 6-0 run, culminating in an attack error by Paula Stilkey. After the Rams scored four of the set’s next five points, Mary Seals, the Wolfpack’s career kills record holder, put the match away with a kill for the victory.

Senior Mary Seals, playing her last regular season home match at The Den, had 24 kills on the night. Gina Gill contributed 13 kills in the win. Sarah Howard, also playing her final home regular season match, assisted on 40 Wolfpack points. Seals and Kristie Hadley each tallied a team high three service aces.

Defensively, senior Keelyn Henderson dug out 19 Ram attacks. The final member of the Wolfpack’s class of 2008, Stacey Kersten, contributed nine digs. At the net, Ashley England blocked three Ram attacks for Wolfpack points. Sarah Howard and Gina Gill each added two blocks.

Due to tiebreakers, the Wolfpack will now enter the GCAC Tournament as the number two seed. Loyola’s first match will be at 3 pm on Nov. 14 against Belhaven.

The GCAC Tournament will be held in The Den on Nov. 14 and 15.
