Loyola women's hoops ranked 24th in NAIA preseason poll
October 31, 2008
Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team is ranked 24th in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Preseason Poll.
The Wolfpack received 79 votes in the initial ranking of the season, just eight votes behind Berry (Ga.) for 23rd position. It is the second time in the program’s history that Loyola has been ranked in the pre-season poll. Last season, the Wolfpack opened the season ranked 15th with 137 votes.
Loyola will face four teams in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 as the Wolfpack opens the regular season against the #1 team in the nation, Union University, Nov. 20 at the Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn.
The maroon and gold will also square off against #3 Freed-Hardeman (Nov. 22 and Nov. 29), #9 Lambuth (November 21), and GCAC foe #19 Xavier (Jan. 29 and Feb. 4 in The Den). Another GCAC club, William Carey, received one vote in the preseason poll.
The Smith twins return for their junior campaign. Second Team NAIA All-American Trenese Smith averaged 19.7 ppg. and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention Trenell Smith scored 18.4 ppg in 2007-08. The sisters are within striking distance of the all-time scoring record set by Kiely Schork last season. The Wolfpack’s leading rebounder, Christine Mainguy (8.7 rpg) will also return for Loyola.
First-year head coach Kellie Kennedy will take the Wolfpack to Baton Rouge for an exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 5 against LSU in the Maravich Assembly Center. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
