Basketball and volleyball players honored by Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
October 24, 2008
Loyola guard Sean Bennett was named 2008-09 pre-season all conference for men’s basketball today by the vote of the GCAC coaches.
Bennett, the 5-foot-10-inch junior from Mandeville, La., had a breakout season last year where he scored 12.6 ppg. The Wolfpack guard also made 52 three pointers while shooting 36 percent from behind the arc.
The team will begin their season on Friday, Oct. 31, when they host Carver Bible College at 7 p.m. in The Den.
The GCAC also named women’s basketball players and twins, Trenese and Trenell Smith, to the pre-season All-GCAC squad today.
Trenese Smith, the two-time conference player of the year, makes her second appearance on the pre-season All-Conference team. Last season, en route to being named a second team National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American, Trenese scored a school record 690 points, including a single game record 39 against Dillard where she hit a conference record tying ten three pointers.
Trenell Smith, a two-time postseason All-Conference selection, is making her first appearance on the pre-season list. Last season, she had the second highest scoring season with 644 points. She picked up a rare triple-double in the conference tournament semi-finals last season with 19 points, 11 rebounds and ten assists against William Carey. Trenell was named an honorable mention on the NAIA All-American list.
The Smith twins and the rest of the Wolfpack open the 2008-09 season Nov. 5 with an exhibition contest in Baton Rouge against the LSU Lady Tigers at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The regular season opener will be at the Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn., with a game against host school Union University at 5 p.m. on Nov. 20.
Finally, two Loyola volleyball players, Keelyn Henderson and Mary Seals, were honored this week by the GCAC as well.
Henderson, the 5-foot-5-inch senior, won the Libero of the Week for the sixth consecutive week. She averaged 4.36 digs and is closing in on 1000 digs for her career. It is the sixth time she has been given the award this year, tying Loyola's season record that was set by Kelly Fridge in 2006.
Seals, the 6-foot senior from Austin, Tex., won Hitter of the Week for the second time this season. She averaged 3.47 kills for the week and is on pace to break Loyola's career mark at 1936, set by Maggie Schaefer in 2002.
After Wednesday night’s victory over Spring Hill College, the Wolfpack will return to play a final three match home stand at The Den to wrap up the regular season. The first of the three will be on Oct. 29th at 7 p.m. against Dillard University.
