Aquila Theatre Company performs Homer’s “Iliad” at Loyola

October 17, 2008

The Aquila Theatre Company, the professional company-in-residence at New York University’s Center for Ancient Studies, will travel to Loyola University New Orleans to perform Homer’s “The Iliad: Book One.”

The performance takes place on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communication/Music Complex, on Loyola’s main campus.

“The Iliad: Book One” takes place nine years after the start of the Trojan War when the Greeks are still unable to defeat their enemy. Agamemnon, the commander, clashes with the best warrior, Achilles, over the division of war prizes and is forced to give back the girl Chryseis to her father after Apollo sends a terrible plague. Agamemnon claims Achilles’ war prize Briseis to save face, and the furious Achilles withdraws from the fighting and asks the Gods to turn the war against the Greeks.

Aquila’s production tells the main parts of the story in an action-packed hour and fifteen minute performance using Stanley Lombardo’s translation. “The Iliad: Book One” was first performed by Aquila Theatre at Lincoln Center and the entire Iliad was performed as a fully staged reading at Classic Stage Company in New York. The production design is based on the cover photo of Stanley Lombardo’s 1998 Hackett Publishing translation, “Into the Jaws of Death.”

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students, and can be purchased through the Loyola Box Office at www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling (504) 865-2074. Tickets will also be available 30 minutes prior to the performance at the Loyola Box Office, located in the breezeway of the Communications/Music Complex, on the corner of St. Charles and Calhoun Street.
