Loyola's menís and womenís basketball picked in GCAC poll
October 3, 2008
The Loyola women’s basketball team was picked second in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference’s pre-season poll as picked by the conference’s coaches.
The poll, which was announced Tuesday at the league meetings at Xavier, has the Gold Nuggets as the top team with 80 votes, including eight of the ten first-place votes. William Carey College followed behind Loyola just three votes shy of the Wolfpack’s 69 votes. The Lady Saders garnered the other two first-place votes.
Loyola has won the last two GCAC regular season titles. Last season, the Wolfpack made it to the NAIA Elite Eight—the best finish in Loyola’s history.
Also on Tuesday, the men’s basketball team was picked seventh in the GCAC’s pre-season poll. LSU-Shreveport sits at the top of the poll with nine out of the ten first-place votes and 81 total points. Xavier received the only other first-place vote and received 71 votes for second.
Last season, Loyola achieved the first winning campaign since 1994-95 and set “new era” records with wins in a season (16) and GCAC victories (9). The last time a Loyola team won more than 16 games in a season was 1947-48.
