Twomey Center moves on campus, now linked to College of Social Sciences

October 3, 2008

Loyola University New Orleans announces the Twomey Center for Peace Through Justice will move from its current location on South Carrollton Avenue to Loyola’s main campus. The center will be merged into the College of Social Sciences and will be located in Mercy Hall. The move should be completed by Nov. 1.

The move is part of President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D.’s plan to link Loyola’s centers and institutes to colleges within the university to maximize synergy in community work and academics.

Ted Quant, director of the center, says moving to campus will improve opportunities for interaction among his staff, faculty and students, and CSS was the logical choice in which to relocate. The center researches and acts on issues of workers’ rights, racism, poverty and justice.

“In thinking about where we might best land, given that we are doing community work and social justice work, the College of Social Sciences seemed to fit,” Quant said.

“On Calhoun Street, in the early days of the center, a lot of our work was with students and getting them involved in the social justice work of the center. Being separated, we became less and less available for that work. This will create more opportunity for us and the university.”

CSS Dean Luis Mirón agrees.

“The Twomey Center can be a hands-on internship clearing house for community service,” Mirón said. “Our social justice majors clearly have interest in those issues, and this will allow them real life social justice experiences.”

“All of the work the center has done in the community can be related to the college on a variety of fronts, and there will be greater interaction between the community relations experience and the academic experience.”
