Loyola University hosts green-themed congressional forum

September 26, 2008

Loyola University Community Action Program, Gulf Restoration Network and the Alliance for Affordable Energy are co-sponsoring a forum on environmental issues for candidates in the race for United States Representative in Louisiana’s 2nd District.

The forum, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. in Loyola’s Roussel Hall, will be moderated by WWL-TV Anchor Dennis Woltering. Six of the seven candidates in the race have committed to attend the forum.

The forum caps off a day of events all over New Orleans which coincide with “Green Jobs Now: A National Day of Action to Build the New Economy,” sponsored by environmental groups Green for All, 1Sky and Al Gore’s We Campaign.

The forum will focus on how candidates plan to grow the green economy, create green jobs and move toward powering New Orleans and the U.S. with clean, renewable electricity. Candidates will present opening statements on their green platforms and then answer questions related to those environmental topics.

Loyola Director of Co-curricular Programs Chris Cameron said this forum fulfills LUCAP’s mission, which is to provide and direct volunteers in service-oriented activity within the community and the university; promote social justice; and aid in students’ social and spiritual growth through their involvement in service and care-giving activities.

“I think the forum is the perfect opportunity for students to put social justice into action. It is important that candidates for political office know that students are serious about sustaining New Orleans through the implementation of green practices and policies,” Cameron said.

GRN Representative Jonathan Henderson said the timing of the Saturday day of action and forum is fortuitous, considering it follows the first presidential debate Friday, and Loyola provides the perfect locale.

“I’m really appreciative to LUCAP and Loyola for offering up their venue for this important event,” Henderson said.
