Loyola completes chemistry wing

September 10, 2008

Loyola University New Orleans has modernized its chemistry laboratories with the completed renovation of its Choppin Chemistry Wing. The completion of this second phase of construction and renovation, totaling approximately $1.2 million, created space to house new labs, a collaborative learning center and departmental offices.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the second phase of the Choppin Chemistry Wing will take place September 18, at 12:30 p.m., on the first floor of Monroe Hall, located on Loyola’s main campus.

Thomas Spence, associate professor of chemistry and department chair, explained the new space will feature collaborative areas that will enable students to work in teams to complete projects.

“Our facilities here were simply outdated. We are pleased to now be able to offer better spaces, with added safety, to not only chemistry majors, but to all students who may have to complete a chemistry component due to their degree requirements,” said Spence, adding that the labs will feature new hood spaces, used for ventilating chemicals.

Curriculum reforms and a significant increase in the number of students using the chemistry labs contributed to the need for renovation and modernization of the facilities in Monroe Hall, which was built more than 30 years ago.

The first phase of the renovation, which cost approximately $2 million, was completed in October 1999 and dedicated in honor of distinguished alumnus Dr. Gregory A. Choppin, a nuclear chemist and the R.O. Lawton Distinguished Chemistry Professor at Florida State University.
