Loyola menís basketball best in NAIA academically, all athletic teams honored

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) honored each of Loyola University New Orleans six intercollegiate athletics teams with the men’s basketball team taking the top spot with the highest grade point average as NAIA Scholar Teams. Volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s basketball, and baseball also gained distinction as each program had a cumulative 3.0 or better grade point average.
The men’s hoops team had the highest GPA in the NAIA. The Wolfpack men finished the year with a 3.43 GPA. The Loyola men achieved their first winning season since the 1994-95 campaign- going 16-13 on the season. The Wolfpack set “new era” records with wins in a season and wins in the conference with nine.
Loyola’s baseball team was ranked 15th in the NAIA with a team GPA of 3.05. The Wolfpack baseball team completed Coach Gerald Cassard’s first year with an 18-33 record.
The volleyball team had a GPA of 3.36 and was ranked 30th in the NAIA. The Wolfpack won the GCAC championship and qualified for the NAIA region. Loyola won 28 games last season- the most since 2002.
The Loyola women’s hoops team completed the year with a GPA of 3.28 which ranked 34th in the NAIA. Last season, the Wolfpack advanced to the NAIA Final Eight for the first time in the program’s history. Loyola also won a program best 28 games last season and was the GCAC regular season champion.
Loyola’s men’s cross country team finished with a GPA of 3.36 and was 11th in the NAIA and the women’s program had a GPA of 3.32 with a ranking of 42nd respectively.
“Obviously, we’re thrilled with all our programs being ranked among the best academically in the NAIA. It’s just icing on the cake that our men’s team is at the top of the basketball list. It is our goal to excel in competition and in the classroom. Our student-athletes, coaches and support staff deserve the credit for this terrific honor,” said Loyola Athletic Director/Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dr. Michael Giorlando.
