Loyola student public relations team wins national title
May 16, 2008
The 2008 Bateman team at Loyola University New Orleans recently took first place in the national Bateman public relations competition. The team won with a public relations campaign that promoted Safe Kids Worldwide, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing unintentional childhood injury.
Loyola’s Bateman team, sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), was one of three teams that went to the national PRSSA Bateman competition held May 1 - 4 in Detroit, Mich. The team is comprised of mass communication majors Shannon Corrigan, Harvey, La.; Daniel Mazier, Phoenix, Ariz.; Andrea Mulcrone, Park Ridge, Ill.; Kelly Rayner, Jamaica Estates, N.Y.; and Kelly Roth, Laplace, La.
In this year's competition, the campaign, “Safe Kids Buckle Up,” asked students to address the issue of seat belt usage among youth, ages 11 to 14. Loyola’s team presented their campaign, “Step Up, Strap In,” to executives from General Motors and Safe Kids Worldwide. The two other finalist teams were from California State University at Long Beach and Texas Christian University.
The PRSSA Bateman Competition is a national contest among universities to promote nonprofits. It is the nation’s most prestigious and challenging competition for public relations students. This is the fifth year that Loyola has placed first in the competition. Loyola took top honors in 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2005.
