Loyola at a Glance
Loyola to feature regional high school bands during its annual invitational
March 14, 2008
This Saturday, Loyola will host several regional high school bands as they travel to perform at the Loyola Invitational Band Festival. These bands, which were selected by taped audition, will have the opportunity to perform for one of the industry’s leading educators and composers and this year’s guest artist, Francis McBeth. To conclude the day, McBeth will direct the Loyola University Wind Ensemble as they perform music which will include his original compositions “Through Countless Halls of Air,” commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, “Coventry” and “Of Sailors and Whales.” For a complete schedule of the day’s events, please see below.
McBeth has enjoyed an extensive career as a conductor, educator and composer. He has worked with many notable bands and orchestras including the Arkansas Symphony, where he was the conductor until his retirement from the organization in 1973. McBeth has an extensive repertoire of compositions and travels throughout the United States regularly as a band clinician. McBeth is currently Professor of Music, Resident Composer and Chairman of the Theory-Composition Department at Ouachita University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He has held this position since 1957.
The regional high schools that will participate in this year’s invitational band festival include Hahnville High School, Faith Academy from Mobile, Alabama and Northshore High School. These groups will be given the opportunity to perform and be critiqued by McBeth.
The festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The final concert with the Loyola University Wind Ensemble will be at 3 p.m.
All events are free and open to the public.
