Loyola to play tribute to jazz during its annual festival

March 7, 2008

Guest artist Steve Davis

It’s all about jazz this weekend at Loyola University New Orleans. The university’s annual jazz festival takes place Friday and Saturday and will include performances by acclaimed trombonist Steve Davis, Loyola jazz faculty members as well as a battle of the high school jazz bands.

Davis, the guest artist for this year’s festival, has enjoyed an extensive career as a jazz artist and educator and has worked with many notable jazz icons such as Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Chick Corea and the cooperative sextet One for All. Davis is currently a member of the faculty at the Hartt School of Music’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford in Connecticut.

Several regional high schools including Jesuit High School, Baton Rouge High School and Mandeville High School, will compete for bragging rights as the best school big band and combo, which will be judged by Davis and Loyola jazz faculty members.

The visiting schools will compete from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in instrumental jazz masterclasses which will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Loyola Faculty Jazz Sextet will perform Friday at 7:30 p.m. This group includes Tony Dagradi, Brian Seeger, John Vidacovich, Larry Sieberth, John Mahoney and guest bassist Tim Aucoin. The Loyola Jazz Band, along with Davis, will perform Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public with the exception of the Faculty Jazz Sextet concert on Friday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. and the Loyola Jazz Band performance with Davis on Saturday, March 8, at 4:30 p.m. All events will take place in Roussel Hall in the Communications/Music Complex on Loyola’s main campus.

Tickets for the two concerts are $10 general admission and $5 for Loyola faculty and staff and students with ID. They can be purchased online at http://montage.loyno.edu or by calling (504) 865-2074.
