Loyola University’s Jazz Underground Series presents “Songs from the Heart” featuring Germaine Bazzle
February 1, 2008
The Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts proudly presents “Songs from the Heart” featuring Germaine Bazzle as part of their 2007-2008 Montage Jazz Underground Series. On Thursday, February 14, at 7:30 p.m., renowned New Orleans jazz vocalist Germaine Bazzle performs an array of love songs that have become part of the standard jazz repertoire. The performance takes place in The Underground, located in the basement of the Danna Student Center, on the Loyola University main campus.
Germaine Bazzle is widely considered to be one of the best jazz singers New Orleans has ever produced. In performance, Bazzle’s rich, dusky contralto voice lends a supple sophistication to her elegant, sometimes quirky, interpretation of classic tunes written by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. Her ability to scat is well known and adds a unique dimension to her performances. During her shows, she creates a unique flair by adding melodic twists and turns where they are least expected, which may include imitating a bass, trumpet, or saxophone in a moment of improvisational fantasy. As a teenager, Bazzle was influenced by other jazz artists such as Billy Eckstine, Buddy Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughn.
The Jazz Underground Series is part of Loyola University’s 2007-2008 Montage Series. The Montage Series is a fine and performing arts showcase that exhibits some of the top arts events in the New Orleans region. The Jazz Underground Series, organized by Associate Professor of Jazz Studies Tony Dagradi, boasts an exciting line-up of artists that will perform on the Loyola campus throughout the 2007-2008 season.
