Economics professor receives 2007 Dux Academicus Award

January 11, 2008

Loyola University New Orleans Harold E. Wirth Eminent Scholar Chair in Economics and Professor of Economics Walter E. Block, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2007 Dux Academicus Award. Nominated by colleagues, students, and former students, Block was chosen for his leadership, outstanding achievements in teaching and scholarship, and notable contributions to the quality of life in the Loyola community. Loyola University President Kevin Wm. Wildes, Ph.D., S.J., presented the award to Block on January 4 at the university’s spring convocation.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Block. “As a highly heterodox economist and political philosopher of the free enterprise variety, I am extremely grateful to Loyola University New Orleans for their support. Not only have they hired me, they tenured me. Not only did they tenure me, they actually appreciate my campus and other contributions to the dialogue on political economy. This eloquently bespeaks the adherence of the faculty and administration of this great university to the cause of intellectual diversity.”

Block has been a member of the Loyola faculty since 2001, serving as professor and as the Harold E. Wirth Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair in Economics for the College of Business. He is also Senior Fellow with the Ludwig von Mises Institute and a doctoral supervisor at the business school at Grenoble Ecole de Management in Eseade, Argentina.

Block is an author, editor, and co-editor of many books and more than 500 articles for various non-refereed journals, magazines, and newspapers, and is a contributor to such journals as The Review of Austrian Economics, Journal of Libertarian Studies, The Journal of Labor Economics, Cultural Dynamics, and Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics. Block earned his Ph.D. in Economics at Columbia University and his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Brooklyn College.
